Same-Day Delivery and Electronic Payments

Mail order is one of the few business segments in Japan that have performed strongly despite sluggish growth in consumer spending. The Yamato Group provides a wide range of services to mail order providers aspiring to boost earnings on the back of the growing popularity of Internet shopping. The basic strategy of these services is to further enhance the convenience for the buyer, under the ultimate goal to grow the bottom line of mail order businesses by improving customer satisfaction. To address consumer demand to receive an order as quickly as possible, Yamato Transport began offering to mail order providers the Today Shopping Service (TSS), which can deliver a customer's order as quickly as the same day it was ordered. Yamato Transport also addressed consumer demand for a broad mix of payment options by having its sales drivers (SD) use a handy terminal that can process most types of electronic money (e-money) developed and used in Japan today. Both of these approaches demonstrate that the Yamato Group is committed to improving consumer convenience from a variety of angles.

In addition to solutions that leverage its TA-Q-BIN infrastructure, the Yamato Group has also recently begun to provide proprietarily developed solutions to mail order providers. Specifically, these solutions include the Today Shopping Service (TSS), which can deliver a product as quickly as the same day it was ordered, and a payment solution that utilizes a handy terminal that can process all major types of e-money used in Japan today.
"Mail order customers are impatient people." says Tsukasa Funakoshi, General Manager, Quick Online Shopping Logistics Company, Yamato Logistics Co., Ltd. Normally, it takes quite some time for mail order providers to process an order. In most cases, it takes between two to three days just to get the merchandise out of the direct marketer's warehouse. As a result, even when using TA-Q-BIN, it can take upwards of three to four days for merchandise to arrive at the home of the buyer.
TSS was developed based on feedback from consumers who wanted an expedited delivery service. "Using TSS, an order placed online with a mail order provider between 10:00pm and 12:00am – considered the primetime of Internet shopping – can be delivered as soon as before the end of the morning of the next day. The unparalleled speed of delivery will enhance customer satisfaction." explains Funakoshi. TSS, which was launched in April 2008, has made it possible for an order placed with a mail order provider before noon to be delivered as soon as later the same day.
Enhanced customer satisfaction is not the only advantage to be gained from using this service, as mail order providers stand to reduce the ratio of returned products. Since TSS enables a consumer to obtain merchandise in as quickly as the same day it was ordered, they can receive the product with the same emotion as when they placed the order, which as a result reduces product returns.
